Freeing Business Owners
To Grow Profitably. |
Have you ever tried to introduce something new to someone and you just
couldn’t connect? I remember sometime in the mid-90’s listening to a
company orientation session on the amazing potential and pitfalls of
something the presenter called “the internet”. After it was over I
thought to myself “why are they wasting my time with something this
complicated? It should stay with the researchers.”
My perception of the computer as a tool for my work world had not yet
caught up with the reality of a fast changing world. It is
unfathomable to me now that I missed seeing the opportunity to someday
order running shoes from my computer!
Think about this principle when introducing your products and services
to a new prospect… perception is reality. Consider the distance
that you and your team have gone to aspire to delight your customers.
When connecting with your potential customers are they immediately
transformed into your views or are do they often remain in their world
shaped by their past experiences and set of expectations?
Researchers tell us that the brain, with which you and I perceive the
world, is made up of neurons “buzzing” at 50 cycles a second, while
the world as it exists in reality, is made up of electro-magnetic
radiation oscillating at 500 trillion cycles a second. This means that
the human brain cannot nearly keep up with the ‘realness’ of reality.
The rest of this month we will unpack the basic principles of
promotion – how to consistently bridge the chasm between your
prospect’s current perceptions and the reality of what your business
offers them. Thanks to the internet I am looking forward to our
discussion this coming month!
Reflections
Where, do you sense, are the biggest gaps between perception and
reality with your customers?
Quote
“Customers perceive service in their own unique, idiosyncratic,
emotional, irrational, end-of-the-day, and totally human terms.
Perception is all there is!”
